Sermon Outline From Ephesians 5:22-24

God cares deeply about the home. He designed it as the first institution, a place where love, order, and faith flourish. In Ephesians, Paul teaches us how God’s plan works best, beginning with wives joyfully walking in God’s design.

Think about a choir. Every voice matters, but harmony only comes when each sings their part. In the same way, marriage thrives when husbands lead sacrificially and wives walk in Christlike submission. Together, they display the beauty of the gospel.

Today, we focus on God’s calling for wives. This is not man’s idea, but the Lord’s gracious plan, meant for blessing, joy, and the glory of Christ in every home.

1. Submission is Required

“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:22a)

A. She accepts God’s order

God established marriage with a clear design. He called husbands to lead with love and wives to respond with respect. When she accepts God’s order, she acknowledges His wisdom and trusts His plan. This acceptance is not weakness but strength, for she chooses to honor the Lord above herself (Colossians 3:18).

Think of Sarah who honored Abraham by calling him lord (1 Peter 3:6). She was not bowing to a man’s pride but showing trust in God’s arrangement. Submission begins when a wife willingly says, “Lord, I believe Your design is best, and I will follow it with a heart of faith.”

B. She embraces her role

Submission is more than acknowledgment; it is action. When she embraces her role, she chooses joyfully to walk in it. She finds freedom in fulfilling what God has called her to do. This choice honors the Lord and builds trust in her husband’s leadership (Proverbs 31:11-12).

Mary, the mother of Jesus, displayed this spirit. Though her calling was difficult, she said, “Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). A wife who embraces her role reflects this same trust. She says with her life, “God’s way is best, and I will live it for His glory.”

To All My Students: This material provides some ideas and thoughts for a message from Ephesians 5:22-24 (God’s Design For Wives in the Home).

2. Submission is as to the Lord

“”Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:22b)

A. She serves Christ first

The foundation of submission is not her husband but her Savior. She serves Christ first, and through that, she honors her husband. This mindset lifts submission from a mere duty to an act of worship. When she submits, she does it for Jesus’ sake (Colossians 3:23).

Paul reminds us that whatever we do, we do for the Lord. A wife’s obedience in the home is no exception. Her motivation flows from her love for Christ, and her submission becomes a daily testimony that He is her Lord.

B. She trusts Christ’s care

When a wife submits, she rests in Christ’s care. She does not place blind faith in her husband but ultimate faith in the Lord. She knows that Christ governs her life, even through imperfect leadership. That trust gives her peace and confidence (Psalm 37:5).

Just as the Church trusts Christ to guide and provide, the wife trusts Christ to sustain her. Submission then becomes not fearful surrender but a confident faith in a Savior who never fails.

3. Submission Reflects God’s Plan

“For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything … and let the wife see that she respects her husband.” (Ephesians 5:23-24, 33b)

A. She obeys God’s Word

God’s Word clearly teaches that wives are to submit to their husbands. Obedience is not optional; it is a command. She obeys God’s Word not grudgingly but joyfully, believing every command brings blessing. As she obeys, she demonstrates a heart that treasures Scripture (John 14:15).

The beauty is that her obedience shows others the power of God’s Word lived out. Like the Thessalonians who received the Word as truth (1 Thessalonians 2:13), she receives this instruction as God’s best for her marriage.

B. She honors God’s design

Submission pictures Christ and the Church. When she honors God’s design, she preaches a sermon without words. She shows the gospel through her marriage. This design is not cultural but eternal, rooted in Christ’s relationship with His bride (Ephesians 5:23-24).

Her submission, then, is not about personal preference but about God’s eternal picture. She becomes part of God’s living illustration, pointing others to Jesus. That is a calling filled with purpose, dignity, and eternal value.

Conclusion

God’s design for the home is not outdated or restrictive—it is life-giving. When a wife walks in submission, she honors Christ.

Her obedience points beyond her husband to the Lord who gave the command, and this act becomes an offering of worship.

Let us remember: when homes follow God’s order, they shine as a living picture of Christ and His Church. May our families reflect that holy design.
