Sermon Outline From John 1:14-18

The incarnation of Jesus Christ reveals one of the greatest truths in Scripture. The eternal Son of God became flesh and entered our world without surrendering His divine nature. Imagine that! The Creator of the universe came to live among ordinary people. He came to reveal God’s glory, demonstrate His love, and provide salvation for sinners. What a wonderful expression of God’s grace!

In John 1:14–18, we discover three important truths about Jesus Christ and why His coming matters today. First, we will see how Christ became flesh and revealed His divine glory. Second, we will discover how He brought God’s grace and truth. Finally, we will learn how Jesus perfectly revealed the Father. Together, these truths encourage us to know God better and trust Him more deeply.

1. Christ Became Flesh (John 1:14–15)

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, ‘This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.'” (John 1:14-15)

A. He Dwelt Among Us (John 1:14)

The Bible says, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). Imagine the eternal Son of God entering our world and living among ordinary people. Jesus experienced hunger, tiredness, sorrow, and the challenges of everyday life. Yet He never surrendered His divine nature. He remained fully God while becoming fully human.

What does this mean for us today? Jesus understands our struggles because He experienced human life firsthand. Hebrews 4:15 reminds us that He faced temptation without sinning. When life becomes difficult, remember that our Savior understands our pain. We can approach Him confidently because He knows our weaknesses and cares deeply about us.

B. He Revealed Divine Glory (John 1:14–15)

In verse 14 John states, “we beheld His glory” (John 1:14). Jesus revealed His divine glory through His perfect character, powerful miracles, and gracious words. John the Baptist also testified to Christ’s eternal existence, declaring, “He was before me” (John 1:15). Although John was born first, Jesus existed before him because He is the eternal Son of God.

This truth should strengthen our confidence in Jesus Christ. He is not merely a good teacher or an inspiring religious leader. He is the eternal Son of God who possesses divine power and authority. When circumstances seem overwhelming, remember who Jesus is. The Savior who revealed God’s glory also possesses the power to sustain us through life’s greatest challenges. This material provides some ideas and thoughts for a sermon outline from John 1:14-18 (Jesus Christ: God Among Us).

2. Christ Brought Grace and Truth (John 1:16–17)

“And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:16-17)

A. He Brings Abundant Grace (John 1:16)

In verse 16 John says, “And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace” (John 1:16). Jesus Christ offers an endless supply of God’s grace. We receive salvation through His grace, not through our good works (Ephesians 2:8–9). Like a flowing river, His grace continues to meet our spiritual needs as we walk with Him.

But God’s grace does not end when we receive salvation. It also strengthens us through life’s daily challenges. Paul discovered this when the Lord declared, “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:9). When trials overwhelm us, we can depend upon Christ’s grace. His strength sustains us when our own strength fails.

B. He Reveals God’s Truth (John 1:17)

John explains that God gave the law through Moses, but “grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17). God’s law revealed His holy standards, but Jesus brought grace and truth in their fullness. He perfectly revealed God’s character, His promises, and His plan of salvation. Through Christ, we discover how to know God personally.

Today, people encounter countless opinions about what is right and wrong. Yet Jesus declares, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). His truth never changes with popular opinion. When we face difficult decisions, we must turn to God’s Word, trust His promises, and follow His ways. (Source Material: John MacArthur, The MacArthur Bible Commentary, pp. 1346-1348)

3. Christ Revealed the Father (John 1:18)

“No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.” (John 1:18)

A. He Knows the Father Intimately (John 1:18)

John describes Jesus as the eternal Son who is “in the bosom of the Father” (John 1:18). This expression reveals the close and eternal relationship between Jesus Christ and God the Father. Jesus knows the Father perfectly because He shares the same divine nature. Their relationship existed before creation and continues throughout eternity (John 17:5).

What a wonderful truth for us today! Jesus does not merely tell us about someone He has heard of. He knows the Father personally and perfectly. Therefore, we can trust everything Jesus teaches us about God. When doubts trouble our hearts, remember that our Savior knows the Father completely and leads us into a genuine relationship with Him.

B. He Declares the Father Clearly (John 1:18)

In verse 18 John declares, “No one has seen God at any time” (John 1:18). Yet Jesus Christ makes the invisible God known to humanity. Through His words, actions, compassion, and holiness, Jesus reveals the Father’s character. He told Philip, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Jesus perfectly reveals what God is like.

Many people today wonder whether God truly cares about their struggles. Jesus answers that question through His compassion, love, and willingness to save sinners. When we look at Jesus, we discover the Father’s heart toward humanity. Therefore, we can approach God with confidence, knowing that Christ faithfully reveals His character and invites us to trust Him. (Source Material: John F. Walvoord and Roy B. Zuck, The Bible Knowledge Commentary: New Testament, p. 273)

Conclusion

John 1:14–18 reminds us of three wonderful truths about Jesus Christ. First, the eternal Son of God became flesh and revealed His divine glory. Second, Jesus brought the fullness of God’s grace and truth, providing everything we need for salvation and spiritual growth. Finally, Christ revealed the Father, showing us God’s character, love, and holiness. What a wonderful Savior we have!

These truths should shape how we understand God’s Word and live each day. When difficulties arise, remember that Jesus understands our struggles and supplies the grace we need. His truth guides our decisions, while His perfect revelation of the Father strengthens our faith. Therefore, let us trust His promises, obey His Word, and live for His glory.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for sending Your beloved Son into our world. What wonderful love and grace You have shown us through Jesus Christ! Thank You that He became flesh, revealed Your divine glory, and brought us the fullness of grace and truth. Help us understand more deeply who Jesus is and appreciate everything He has done for our salvation.

Lord, strengthen our faith as we face the challenges of everyday life. Remind us that Jesus understands our struggles and provides the grace we need. Guide our hearts through Your Word, and help us walk in Your truth. May our lives reflect Your love, honor Your name, and bring glory to our Savior. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.

BONUS: How Can Jesus Christ Be Both Fully God and Fully Human?

Jesus Christ is fully God and fully human because the eternal Son of God took on human nature. John 1:14 declares, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Jesus never surrendered His divine nature when He became human. Colossians 2:9 confirms that the fullness of deity dwells in Him. He possesses both divine and human natures.

This wonderful truth helps us understand why Jesus is our perfect Savior. As God, He possesses the power to forgive sins and give eternal life. He existed with the Father before creation (John 1:1–2).
